My favorite things about Halloween as an adult is sitting on my front porch with a nice glass of red wine enjoying the warmth of the evening and handing out candy to all the little ones that come. Our neighborhood is one where there are tons of children so there is usually a non-stop flow of little tick-or-treaters all coming up our porch stairs in their cute princess, ninja and super hero costumes to get a snack and treat.
We are fortunate to live in a neighborhood where it’s small enough we know almost everyone and we’ve developed some good relationships over the years. Halloween is one of those special evenings where we can say hi to each other and enjoy a few minutes catching up while enjoying a stroll around the neighborhood checking out the decorations and listening to the giggles all along the street.
The treats of Halloween are equally fun. I usually have to buy huge bags of candy to make it through the evening and there will be some before and after sampling by my family of course. I also try to make something special like Wild Orange Cookie Brownies or Old Fashioned Cinnamon Popcorn Balls to share with neighbors or just have for our family. Halloween is one of those times we forego the calorie and carb counting and just enjoy the spoils of bountiful bags filled with treats!
Wild Orange Cookie-Brownies
These are a family favorite that I make throughout the year but near Halloween I change things up a bit to add a Halloween twist. To make these tasty treats:
- 1 bag Ghiradelli Chocolate Chip Cookie Mix
- 1 bag Hershey Double Chocolate Brownie Mix
- doTERRA Wild Orange
Preheat oven to 350. Mix each bag separately.
Start with the brownie mix. Mix ingredients per package instructions and add in 4-6 drops doTERRA Wild Orange essential oil and mix well. Pour into prepared 13×9 pan.
Then mix the cookie bag and drop by tablespoon over the brownie mix.
For Halloween I add in colored sprinkles or candied eyes to “float” on top.
Bake for approximately 40 min until toothpick comes out clean.
I really love making this recipe in my mini-brownie pan so I can personalize even further. In this pan I will make a couple with the sprinkles and candied eyes, others with crushed pretzels and a few with peanut butter. Here’s the pan I recommend:
Old Fashioned Cinnamon Popcorn Balls
My great-grandmother Ginny always made popcorn balls for Halloween. When we went to her house trick-or-treating it was popcorn balls and pennies that filled our bags. There are many combinations that can be made to suit preferences in flavor to make them salty, sweet or savory. You can also add candies and other color to the popcorn balls. Wrapping them in pretty bags is also a great way to hand these out to your favorite trick-or-treaters.
- 1 stick unsalted butter
- 1 bag mini marshmallows
- 6 cups popcorn popped
- 3 drops doTERRA Cinnamon, Lemon, Lime, Wild Orange, Peppermint (your choice!)
- Small candies
Pop 5 cups of popcorn and set aside. Prepare a sheet pan with wax paper and set aside.
Melt butter and marshmallows until smooth. Remove from heat and add in doTERRA essential oil flavor of your choice. Let cool slightly and then add in poporn, mixing well. Add in candies. (adding in popcorn while it’s hot will melt your popcorn and candies while also making it hard to form the balls) You can also add in the candies after the balls are formed if you want them just on the outside for presentation.
Form balls the size of your palm and place on wax paper to dry. Wrap or keep in closed container.
Living well naturally looks like a warm evening spent outside catching up with neighbors and sharing a moment together enjoying a treat. It is listening to children giggle and seeing their sparkly costumes as they hold out bags to get candies and treats shyly saying “trick-or-treat” and “thank you.” Sharing special treats makes Halloween makes it feel like a community where friends gather and remark how fast these kids are growing and hoping everyone has been well since we last spoke.
Open your door, sit on your porch and connect with your community.
